Luke is the third in order of the canonical gospels, which, together with Acts, its continuation, is dedicated by Luke to the same patron, most excellent Theophilus. Both gospels were originally written in Greek and both contain many verses which, when compared in the Greek language, are common to Mark's Gospel.
Although originally anonymous, this gospel was attributed later in the second century to the apostle Luke, a physician and companion. It has been suggested that the address to Theophilus could also be a mimesis flag indicating that the author drew some of his material from the works of Josephus, just as modern authors use citations when drawing material from other authors. He especially focuses on those who were outcast by society including the poor and women. So we can build a picture of a Greek-speaking, gentile community in the Middle East, with no knowledge of the gospel stories, but which could have read and followed the sayings of Jesus from the 'Q' document, and wondered about the great man behind those. This is because the 'Q' document consisted of a list of sayings attributed to Jesus, but did not tell where or when Jesus spoke them.
